Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFRs) travelers and imported malaria in the Palermo district (Sicily).

2014

Abstract Introduction. Although Italy has been malaria-free since 1970, the infection is commonly introduced into the country by travelers and immigrants from endemic areas. The term VFRs refers to immigrants from malaria-endemic countries who are regularly resident in a malaria-free area, and who travel to their countries of origin to visit friends and relatives (VFRs). This group is at special risk of malaria as they are unaware of having lost their transitory immunity to the disease. Methods. We conducted a retrospective study at the International Travelers Department of Palermo (Italy), examining records of malaria cases (67) reported over the period from 1998 to 2013. Results. VFRs rep…

Rhythmic Island: Latvian Migrants in Guernsey and their Enfolded Patterns of Space-Time Mobility

2015

Rather than a marginal activity, visiting friends and relatives (VFR) is a fundamental part of the migrant experience. We illustrate this assertion by an in-depth study of Latvian labour migration to Guernsey. Since the 1990s, low incomes and high unemployment in post-Soviet Latvia combine with niche-specific labour demands in Guernsey to create migratory flows of mainly female workers. The small-scale nature of this circular migration system allows a deeper theorisation of the many linkages between migration and VFR. In particular we deploy time-geography and rhythmanalysis to explore the various ways that migration and VFR are enfolded within each other, within the life-courses of the pro…

The role of visiting friends and relatives (VFRS) in imported malaria

2015

With the integration of immigrants in their host countries, a new, special group of travellers - Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFRs) - has emerged over time. The term VFRs refers in particular to immigrants who move to high-income countries from countries where socio-economic status is low, and regularly return to their country of origin, sometimes for fairly long periods of time, to visit their friends and relatives or, where women are concerned, also to give birth and spend the post-partum period with their family. Precisely because they are “special tourists”, VFRs are considered to be at higher risk than other regular travellers of contracting diseases like tuberculosis, HIV and malar…

The contribution of human migration to tourism: The VFR travel between the EU28 member states

2017

This study explores the correlation between human migration and that part of tourism due to people visiting friends and relatives in a foreign country. We first compared the network structure of migration stocks and tourism flows between the 28 member countries of the European Union over the period 2000–2012. Then, we performed several econometric analyses to study the main tourism determinants and the correlations between migration to tourism. The paper derives from the discussion of the results an estimate of the contribution to the overall tourism phenomenon due to visiting friends and relatives. Complex network analysis and gravity models were the investigation methods preferred.
